T. W. CALDICOTT.\ The late Mr Thomas Weaver Caldicott, who died at his residence, \'93Eyton,\'94 Millmerran, on Sunday, 29th instant, was one of the district\'92s early pioneers. Until his death he took a keen and active interest in every movement for the welfare and advancement of the district. He was of a kindly, genial nature and was generally esteemed.\ The deceased was born at Kingsland, Hereford, England, on 4th June 1854. Leaving home on the sailing ship, \'93Young Australia,\'94 he landed at Brisbane at the age of 16 years of age. Making his way to Ipswich, he was for a time engaged in cotton picking, but being an active lad he found the work tedious and determined to seek a more adventurous career, that of droving, and assisted by the late Mr Wm. White and several blackfellows took charge of the first mob of cattle from the Logan to Stock Bluff Downs Station. He next tried his luck at the Palmer gold diggings, but met with no success. He had several encounters with hostile blacks, but was fortunate to escape without injury. He was seized with an attack of malaria, and he decided to return to Ipswich. From there he pushed on to Toowoomba, where he found employment and assisted with the planting of the trees still standing in James Street. Later he was engaged by Mr S. B. Kennard to work on Yandilla Station, remaining there for some years before selecting his first property at Grasstree Creek, on which he remained or the next 20 years, combining wool growing with agriculture, his industry being successful. He then purchased the fine sheep property, \'93Foxwood,\'94 from the late Mr Jas. Markey, where he remained until he increased his holdings by the purchase of \'93Eyton,\'94 another fine grazing property, where he lived until the time of his death.\ The late Mr Caldicott was twice married, the first time at Leyburn to Miss Isabella McGowan, the issue of which was twelve children, eight of whom survive; the second time at Toowoomba to Miss Mary Smith, from which union there is a son.\ The deceased gentleman took a keen and active interest in the Church of England work in the Parish, and had been a warden for forty years. He was a foundation member of the Masonic Lodge in Millmerran, and was also an honorary member of the local G. U. O. O. F. Lodge.\ The funeral took place on Monday and was the largest seen here.\ The surviving children are: Mrs Mary Harlow (Mt. Tyson), Mrs Alice McGrath (Milmerran), Mrs Elizabeth Hensler (Goondiwindi), Mrs Charlotte Davis (Brisbane), Messrs. Thos. W. Caldicott (Grasstree), William Edward, Charles and Rodney (Millmerran).} |
