\f0\fs24 \cf0 EXTRAORDINARY CASE OF ASSAULT.\
At the Rugby Police Court on Monday, John Alexander Caldecott, Long Lawford, gentleman, was charged with assaulting his brother, Colonel C. T. Caldecott, of Holbrook Grange, at Newbold-on-Avon, on Christmas Day. -From the complainant\'92s case it appeared that for some time past Colonel Caldecott and his mother and sisters, who reside with him, have been annoyed by the defendant sending postcards of a vile character, posting offensive notices written in red chalk to represent blood on the gates leading to the Grange, and inserting absurd advertisements in the local newspapers. He had also threatened them, and had cursed his mother and sisters, and has often tried to provoke the complainant to strike him. On Christmas Day, when Colonel Caldecott came out of church, defendant met him and asked if they were to be friends or enemies. Colonel Caldecott replied that he could not be friendly while defendant continued to annoy and curse his mother and sisters, whereupon the defendant hustled him, shook his fist in his face, called him a cur, and threatened to smash his face. -In defence defendant pleaded provocation, alleging that there had been bad blood between him and the family for some time, and especially since in 1881 he was subjected to the torture and degradation of being place in a madhouse without being put upon his trial. He had, however desired to be friendly, and had made conciliatory advances, but to no purpose; and so to have the matter out, and bring it before the public, he went to Newbold on Christmas Day with the intention of committing a technical assault on his brother to drive him to swear sureties of the peace against him. The magistrates considered that what took place beforehand was no provocation, and as they looked upon the assault as a serious one they fined defendant \'a35, and required him to enter into sureties to keep the peace for six months, himself in \'a3300 and two sureties in \'a350 each.}

DEATH OF CAPT. J.A. CALDECOTT\
One of the last survivors of the Crimean War and Indian Mutiny passed away in the person of Capt. J. A. Caldecott, at Long Lawford on Thursday week. Capt. Caldecott had been in failing health for two years, and his last illness was very painful.\
John Alexander Caldecott was the second son of the late Mr. Charles M. Caldecott, of Holbrook Grange, Long Lawford, and Grandson of the late Mr. Abraham Caldecott, of the Lodge, Rugby, who as High Sheriff represented the county of Warwick at the Coronation of King George IV at Westminster on July 19th, 1821. He was born in India in 1836, and was educated at Bradfield College. As a young man he chose an Army career, and held a commission in the old 38th Regiment, serving in the Crimean War, and through the Siege of Sevastopol and later in the Indian Mutiny, when he was present at the relief of Lucknow. He afterwards exchanged into the 35th Regiment and retired from the Army in the seventies with the rank of Captain. He has since lived at Long Lawford, where he was generally loved by reason of his kindly disposition and readiness to help all in need.}
