DEATH OF A FAMOUS RUGBEIAN.
MAJOR-GEN. F. J. CALDECOTT’S DISTINGUISHED CAREER.
As will be seen from our obituary column, the death took place on Saturday at 122 Ebury Street, London, of Major-General Francis James Caldecott, C.B., late Royal Artillery, a member of a well-known local family,
Major-General Caldecott who was 48 (typo – should be 84!) years of age was the fourth son of the late Mr. Charles Marriott Caldecott, J.P., D.L., of Holbrook Grange, Rugby, and was educated at Cheltenham College. He became a Lieutenant in the Bombay Artillery in 1860, Captain Royal Artillery 1872, Major 1880, Brevet Lt.-Col. in the following year, Colonel in 1885, and Major-General in 1894 (in which year he received the C.B.), retiring three years later.
He served in the Abyssinian Expedition in 1867-8, and was mentioned in despatches and received the campaign medal. He also saw service in the Afghan War, 1879-80, and was again mentioned in despatches, was awarded the medal and clasp, and promoted Brevet-Lieut-Colonel.
For many years Major-General Caldecott was superintendent of the Indian Gunpowder and Experimental Explosives factory at Kirkee, and was the inventor of many improvements in the manufacture of gunpowder and its ingredients.
He married twice – first Miss Georgina Watson, daughter of Mr. Hugh Watson, of Keillor, Perthshire, and after her death, Miss Jennie Beatrice Clarke, formerly of Cold Harborn, Wallingford.
In the sixties, General Caldecott was an excellent cricketer and Rugby footballer, and later, in India, he was a leading cricketer and aculler.
The funeral took place at Brookwood Cemetery to-day (Friday).
